What's Your Name And Title?
Cindy Yip, Director of Retail Experience

I'm curious about the origins of Monos and the vision behind the business. Could you tell us more about it?
Monos was founded in 2019 on a quiet but powerful belief: that travel should be approached with mindfulness, joy, and intention. Guided by the Japanese concept of mono no aware  – a deep appreciation for the beauty of fleeting moments – we set out to create travel essentials that marry thoughtful design with lasting function. Our vision is to inspire a more considered way of moving through the world, one that finds meaning in the journey, not just the destination.

Why did you choose Ossington as a location for Monos? How does being part of the Ossington community shape your business?
Ossington felt like the right fit from the beginning. The street’s creative, eclectic energy grounded in community, aligns with our brand’s spirit of exploration and connection. Our space at 111 Ossington Avenue is an immersive extension of Monos: minimalist, warm, and inspired by the character of the neighbourhood. Subtle nods to Portuguese architecture, like curved archways and plaster walls, reflect the area's cultural richness while offering a calm, inviting space to explore our collections.

What are the core products you offer, and why do they stand out to your clients?
Our core collection includes luggage, bags, and travel accessories, each one crafted with intention and designed for modern travellers. Guests are drawn to us not only because we’re a Canadian brand, but also for our commitment to sustainability, accessible pricing, and our lifetime warranty on luggage. Every product is designed to support a seamless and elevated travel experience.

Is there something unique about Monos that you wish more people knew?
We’re more than just a luggage brand. Every element, from the unboxing experience to our in-store design, is meant to evoke calm, intention, and care. We’re deeply influenced by Japanese design principles, which show up not only in our products but in how we approach guest experience and hospitality. That thoughtfulness often surprises and delights first-time visitors.

Are there any exciting developments or offerings you’d like to share with us?
We’re in a meaningful stage of growth. Ossington is our second permanent store and marks an exciting chapter in our retail expansion. In addition to our core luggage line, we’re continuing to build out our travelwear and accessories with seasonal pieces that combine function with quiet refinement. Each store is also a space for connection, where we bring together thoughtful design, curated collections, and elevated service that reflects the care we put into our products.

What are the three best things about being in Ossington?
Ossington’s charm lies in its contrast. The street is home to a vibrant mix of independent shops and hidden gem restaurants, offering moments of quiet discovery and unexpected delight. It’s a creative hub that feels unfiltered yet refined – never overly polished, but always rich with character.

By night, the neighbourhood transforms. Some spaces shift from barbershops to speakeasies, while others host live music or intimate DJ sets, adding a layer of spontaneity to the everyday.

Walkability is another standout, especially during Ossfest, when the street closes to cars and opens to the community. Local businesses come together with pop-ups and limited-time activations, creating a lively, open-air market feel. And with Queen Street and Trinity Bellwoods Park just steps away, the area invites you to explore at your own pace.

Where are your favorite go-to food spots in the area?
Union – perfect for a cozy, hearty meal.

Pizzeria Badiali – for a slice of really good pizza.

And Bowie – for intimate evenings with friends.  The speakeasy setting, paired with live DJs, makes it a favourite place to unwind.

What’s next for Monos—any new projects, products, or collaborations you're excited about?
We’re continuing to expand our retail presence across key cities in North America, creating more spaces where Guests can connect with the brand in a meaningful way. We are also collaborating on a series of limited collections through partnerships that bring together design, storytelling, and the spirit of travel through a fresh and considered lens.

What’s a hidden gem in the neighborhood that you'd recommend?
Area+001 is an exceptionally curated menswear boutique with a sharp eye for design. The owners bring a deep knowledge and appreciation for every piece they carry, making it a place where you’re almost certain to discover something special.
