Toronto Fringe Festival

Project: 100 Broadview
Neighbourhood: Riverside

What’s the story behind Toronto Fringe? How did it all begin?
The Toronto Fringe Festival is part of an international movement aiming to make theatre creation, production and discovery as accessible as possible. Our Festival here in Toronto has been running annually since 1989, and has launched incredible Canadian stories such as The Drowsy Chaperone, 'da Kink in My Hair, Life After, and Kim's Convenience. We return 100% of the ticket profits back to our Festival artists, making our platform truly the ultimate testing ground for new Canadian plays, musicals, dance performances and more every July. This year we are producing 108 shows at 22 venues across the city - and we can't wait to discover some brand new hits!

How long have you been at your current location?
We moved into the building in August 2019.

What made you choose 100 Broadview/Riverside as a location? How does being part of this community shape your business?
We love how accessible the whole building is. Not only the physical accessibility features, but also having folks like Animal Liberation Kitchen right in the lobby for vegan staff and visitors - it's such a welcoming presence!

What do you love most about your current space?
We are in the 4th floor suite for a few more months and have really enjoyed welcoming community into events in the kitchen, board rooms, and screening room. Next, Toronto Fringe will be moving to a suite on the 3rd floor, where we hope to continue creating opportunities to gather with local community as well as visitors from near and far. Toronto Fringe is such a hub of activity and artist advocacy year-round - it's wonderful to have a space that we can welcome our stakeholders and community members to.

How would you describe the vibe of he Riverside community in three words?
Hidden treasures everywhere!

Do you have any favourite local spots for coffee, food, or inspiration?
The thrift stores on Queen East are so great. If you're ever looking for creative inspiration of any kind, I highly suggest poking your head into any of them.

What’s a hidden gem in the neighbourhood you think more people should know about?
Saulter Street Brewery has been a wonderful supporter of the Fringe, so we love to do team trips over there when we are able. Their team is great, and there are often a handful of very sweet local dogs hanging out!
